Scoala Gimnaziala Nr. 279 Bucuresti – Romania

Secondary school Nr. 279 from Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, is a primary and secondary school with 903 students and 50 teachers. After 4 years of primary education pupils move on to gymnasium where for the first time they receive exact marks as opposed to grades. Here is no entrance exam to gymnasium, and it is usually continued at our institution. The also adapt to multiple teachers and a schedule of up to 30 hours per week. The 8th grade marks the last year of the gymnasium, and at the end the pupils need to pass an Assessment Exam, on two subjects: Romanian language and literature, and Mathematics. The final grade at the assessment exam and the average grades during the gymnasium are used for the acceptance into high-school. Before enrolling in high school, students have to decide on whether to pursue a theoretical education in a general high-school, or a professional secondary education, in a vocational high-school. Admittance to high-schools is computed automatically, based on performance in the assessment exam and the preference of the student mentioned on the application form. In Romania the current curriculum does not foresee STEM development, but the targets set out in the institutional development plan of the school approach a modernization of the school program at the unit level and at the community level. Today, the Romanian education system needs new challenges and STEM approaches that could revive interest in studying subjects such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It is necessary for these disciplines to become more provocative, to arouse the imagination and inspiration of today’s students, the citizens of tomorrow’s world. Our aim is creating, developing and promoting an educational ecosystem capable of providing children and students with a comprehensive, balanced and quality education that will enable them to make informed decisions that will impact the world and the way they live. Our school motivations are: – a huge source of inspiration for our future plans; – an unique and very exciting school experience; – school will gain positive opinions and positive feedback about the involvement in the project; – a challenge to become more flexible and adaptable to the new situations; -an opportunity to meet other people who have different traditions, culture and language The key people in charge of running the project in our school are: Gabriela Dima (headmaster, math teacher), Camelia Hoara (headmaster adjunct), Florimela Balosu (Math teacher), Corina Mohorea (primary school teacher), who all participated in an ESA Robitics and Automation Teacher Training Workshop organised by the European Space Agency, in Transinne, Belgium and Daniela Radulici (French teacher), Gabriela Toma (accountant).
